Green Living | Plant Care

To receive the maximum aesthetic and health benefits your plants can provide, it is important to keep them healthy and happy. You’ve spent time at your local flower shop carefully choosing your plants based on how much light your space gets, as well as how much maintenance you’re willing to invest caring for them. What to do next?

Along with sunlight, water is the other essential your plants need to survive and thrive. Rather than sticking to a strict schedule, examine the soil to determine when your plant needs water. Wait until the top two inches of soil are dry to the touch before adding water. If you notice the soil pulling away from the sides of the planter, that’s a sign that your plant is thirsty. Pour room temperature water directly onto the soil around the plant’s base, and make sure to place a saucer beneath the pot to catch excess water as it runs out.

Keep an eye on humidity levels, as well. Plants from a tropical environment prefer high humidity, so they should be misted frequently and can be placed close together or near a humidifier. Desert plants, like succulents, prefer dry air and do much better if you underwater them versus overwatering them.

These are general tips for all house plants, so make sure you do some research and consider the specific needs of your individual plants. If you have any questions or are afraid your plant has become unhealthy, contact the experts at Flower Works, the local favorite flower shop in Marquette, MI.
