Plants to Decorate Your Dorm With - And How to Care for Them

Preparing for your first semester in the dorms can be an exciting adventure. Whether you are going to be here at NMU, or you are getting ready to travel elsewhere, you want to be able to make your dorm space your own. With most dorm situations, space is limited, and there can be a lot of rules pertaining to what you can and can’t have. For plant lovers, you’re in luck! There are several plants that can thrive in a dorm environment that don’t need a lot of care (we know you are busy studying!).

If you are preparing for the fall semester, and you want to add a little something unique to your space, Flower Works can help.

Plants to Consider for Dorm Life

It can be difficult to predict what environment you’ll be moving into. Natural lighting may be questionable, especially if you have a roommate who might pick the best spot first. You’ll also want to consider your own commitment to care. College is full of activities, classes, social events, work, and everything in between. You’ll likely benefit from a plant that can thrive without too much human intervention. If you are looking for an ideal plant for your dorm, we suggest:

  • Air plants- If you are looking for something that is low maintenance and doesn’t take up a lot of space, it doesn’t get much better than an air plant. Also known as Tillandsia, there are over 650 species of these flowering plants. These are a great option for dorm life as you don’t have to worry about soil or repotting. Air plants remain small and only need to be placed in water once a week. They also don’t require a significant amount of sunlight. With a wide range of planters and decorated rocks, glass, and containers to choose from, you can mix and match to create an easy-to-care-for, plant-friendly space in your dorm.

  • Succulents- These plants are another great option for the dorms. They are small, attractive plants that are easy to maintain. You will need access to adequate sunlight, or invest in a small grow light. You’ll want to choose a pot that has good drainage and only water them as needed when the soil feels dry.

  • Snake plants- If you are looking for something larger but still dorm-friendly, snake plants are the way to go. They are slow growing, so you will want to consider the potential need to transfer them back and forth when you go home, but they are also easy to maintain. They thrive in bright, indirect sunlight, and only need to be watered when the soil starts to become dry.
